Two nurses and a doctor at St Rita’s Hospital in Limpopo might find themselves jobless after allegedly giving a newborn baby HIV-Aids tablets.

The nurses allegedly gave Nevirapine to the baby for three consecutive days without checking whether the baby was infected with the virus.

The mother was was admitted to the labour ward and lost a lot of blood during delivery.

The doctor gave the mother two units of blood and she was taken to intensive care. The baby was taken to the neonatal unit.

A nursing sister in the labour ward allegedly told a neonatal nurse to give the baby the tablets without a doctor’s prescription. The next morning the doctor allegedly prescribed medication without checking the baby’s status.

Nurses continued to administer the prescribed medication . The baby’s uncle, a nurse in the hospital, found out what was going on and complained to hospital management. The doctor confirmed the mother was HIV negative and the baby had been given the wrong prescription.

Gloria Moganedi, the mother, said she had taken the matter to her attorney, who is working on papers to sue the hospital.

Provincial department of health spokesman Phuti Seloba said his department was investigating.
