Top 5 diet & nutrition myths exposed

Nearly every woman on planet Earth has been on a diet at some point in their lives, men too, but whether you were stick thin or slightly overweight, everyone feels that they need to conform to the medias overexposed ‘airbrushed’ models. However, whether you are currently on a diet or considering going on one for the new summer season, just make sure you don’t still believe any of these diet and nutrition myths.

Diet myth #1: Drinking water before meals reduces your appetite

While it might make sense to fill your stomach on liquid before eating a meal, the truth is your body won’t be tricked for very long. Your appetite is controlled by the amount of calories you consume as well as by how satisfied you feel after having a meal. So while you may feel temporarily full after downing two glasses of water before every meal, you’ll only end up binging later to make up for the hunger pangs.

Diet Myth #2: Carbohydrates make you fat

It’s true that carbohydrates are packed with calories, but it’s also true that carbs are the main source of energy for the body. Without them, you’ll feel fatigued and generally weak and unfocused. Instead, opt for healthy carbs such as green leafy vegetables that are rich in vitamins and nutrients but that will also keep you going at your optimum without blood sugar spikes.

Diet Myth #3: Skipping meals can help you lose weight

Were all programmed to think that the less calories you consume, the more your body will burn fat making you lose weight. While this has some truth to it, your body also kicks into starvation mode if it isn’t receiving food when it lets you know that you hungry. When this happens, your metabolism slows down and your body actually starts conserving calories because it doesn’t know when it will get food again. To avoid this, eat small well-balanced meals throughout the day to keep hunger at bay and to keep the weight off.

Diet Myth #4: Fat free is better

Even if the label says that the food contains zero grams of fat, that doesn’t necessarily make it the healthiest choice. Your body needs a steady supply of healthy fats to aid tissue repair as well as transport vitamins around the body. Whilst cutting out saturated fats is always a good idea- such as lowering your chances of heart disease- you need to eat healthy fats which can be found in foods such as fish, nuts, olive oil and avocadoes to stay healthy and keep your metabolism running at its best.

Diet Myth #5: Red meat is bad for you

Red meat does contain a lot of saturated fat that if eaten in abundance, can be quite bad for your health. However, there are also ways to trim the fat off which can be done by simply slicing the fat off the meat when it is partially frozen. It’s also important to remember that red meat contains important vitamins and minerals such as iron and Vitamin B which people don’t generally get out of the rest of their diet. Grilled sirloin and steak fillets are your best options if you love your red meat.
