Pelvic Inflammatory Disease

it can lead to infertility or life-threatening complications.
PID can occur naturally, but it is most often a result of an untreated sexually transmitted disease, such as gonorrhoea or chlamydia. Using an intrauterine device (IUD) for birth control can also cause PID, as can germs and douching. Women who douche once or twice a month are more likely to develop PID than those who douche less frequently.
Because douching might reduce the symptoms temporarily, the practice could be to blame for delaying effective treatment of the infection. Sufferers experience dull pain or tenderness in the lower abdomen, burning or pain during urination, nausea or vomiting, bleeding between menstrual periods, pain during intercourse and flu-like symptoms.
PID is often misdiagnosed as appendicitis, ectopic pregnancy – where the fetus grows outside of the uterus, or ruptured ovarian cysts, but an accurate diagnosis of PID can be made when three symptoms are found during a pelvic exam. This trio of symptoms are lower abdominal tenderness, tenderness of the fallopian tubes and ovaries and tenderness of the cervix.
If the above symptoms are present, a visit to a health care provider should definitely be undertaken. All other explanations for the above symptoms need to be ruled out by proper testing to identify the organism which led to the infection.
Adult women with PID are either closely monitored or admitted to a hospital for observation. More aggressive treatment may take place in the hospital for adolescent females, who are at a much higher risk of not following treatment plans and of having complications.
It’s always a good idea to do an annual STD screening to eliminate your risks. Early detection and treatment are very important in limiting the occurrence and effects of PID.
