Size up the right bra

It has been estimated that 80% of women all across the world own the wrong size bra. Without a well fitting bra, the Cooper’s ligaments – your breasts natural support structures – can be easily stretched if repeatedly loaded. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to realize that this will result in saggy, granny-like breasts.
What you probably didn’t know is that the wrong size bra can affect your posture, cause your shoulders to hunch forward whether you’re big breasted or not and also result in back, shoulder and neck pain. That’s a lot of problems that one little lacy number could be giving you.
Fortunately, most lingerie retailers have what they call lingerie fitters, who somehow know your exact size just by taking one look at you. Of course, they won’t make you feel like you entering a nude x-ray machine but they will most likely take your measurements to advice the best bra size and type for your body.

These life-savers will start by taking measurements under your rib cage and all around your back and then across the breasts. This will determine your bra size (32, 34, 36 etc) and your cup size (A, B, C, D etc). If you’re a multi-talented girl that has to juggle work, social events and the gym then tell the lady fitter about your basic wardrobe and she will be able to suggest the correct types of bras that you should be wearing under specific garments.
It’s always great to have professional advice, but you should still let your eyes and your body determine whether that new black number passes the test. If you’re not sure what you should be looking for then try to keep these tips in mind the next time you go lingerie shopping.

The underband is riding up

The underband of the bra which is the thicker band that runs around your back provides 80% of support for the breasts so it’s important to make sure that it isn’t riding up. Try raising your arms during the fitting to see if it slides up, if it does, it could be that it’s too lose and that your bra size (32, 34, 36 etc) is too big.

The shoulder straps are digging in

Shoulder straps provide 20% of the support for your breasts and if you have to tighten them until they’re digging into your shoulders just to keep the girls up then you’ve probably overestimated your bra size. The straps should run directly straight and parallel to each other between your shoulder blades. If they aren’t straight and you having to adjust them tightly to get better support then the underband has either stretched or you’ve bought too big of a bra size.

The center piece is lifting away

If the centre piece in the middle of your underwire bra is floating in the middle of nowhere, then you might have too small a bra size or else your cup size is too small. If you have the right size bra, the centre piece should always rest completely flat against your chest.
Signs you’ve got it right:
·         If the bra fits properly and provides the right support, your nipple should be halfway between your elbow and your shoulder.
·         Once you’ve raised your arms above your head, the underband doesn’t ride up.
·         Your breasts don’t spill out of your bra, or result in ‘overhang’
·         There’s no room to stuff tissues inside the bra cup
·         You look great and have a healthier posture.
