Being a daddy’s little girl means being spoilt rotten, but can it spoil your choice in men?

Researchers have found that opposites do not necessarily attract. Experts from St Andrews University have found that women are attracted to men who remind them of their fathers, and men to women who remind them of their mothers. Apparently, people are more likely to marry partners with the same hair and eye colour as their parent of the opposite sex.

Dr Anthony Little, who led the research said: “We found that people really did pick partners who resembled their opposite sex parent. It is something a lot of people have never looked at or thought about: that their partner shares the same hair and eye colour as their mother or father. But there was clear evidence of this”.

Dr Little added that it is a well known fact that if a person or animal is constantly exposed to an image, they become more attracted to and comforted by it. “There are obviously a number of other factors such as personality, etc, that people look for in their partner but it seems looks are important, whether a person knows it or not. So the old saying that opposites attract really does seem to have been disproven. Rather, birds of a feather flock together, it seems.”

Focusing on women, how does a father influence who you choose as a partner? Well, there are several aspects - his strength, his love and your instincts. Women are instinctively drawn to a man who will protect her and her future children. Strength does not only mean physical strength, but also financial strength and social strength. Most girls tend to lean towards men who have the same strength as their fathers.

Strength could also mean intelligence, authority, perseverance or anything that ought to be important and chances are if you have found a man with all the right strengths, you can probably draw them all back to your father figure. People learn the different ways to express and understand love from their parents.

Your father is most likely the first male figure that provides us with an example of love from a man. Love can be communicated in different ways, including, gifts, words, touch and gestures. If one received a lot of one aspect as a child you might expect the same amount from a prospective partner, or the opposite may be true. If one did not receive any of a certain type of love, you could also want more of that kind.

One should keep in mind that only if there was a positive relationship between father and daughter does the likeliness increase that they will choose similar partners to their fathers. If the relationship was negative and unhealthy there is almost no chance of women choosing men that remind them of their fathers.
